The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has been named one of British Columbia’s Top Employers for 2017. This is the seventh consecutive year BCIT has received the distinction, which acknowledges BC employers for leading their industries in offering exceptional work environments.
“We’re delighted that BCIT has once again been recognized as one of the best employers in British Columbia,” says Ana Lopez, Vice President, Human Resources and People Development. “The expertise and dedication of our faculty members, researchers, and staff is our most valuable asset, and ensuring that we can continue to attract and retain the best employees is critical for the success of our students.”
Among the reasons listed for choosing BCIT, the awards committee cited our robust support for continuous professional development, which includes full tuition subsidies. The committee also mentioned alternative work options made available to support a healthy, balanced life: flexible work hours, telecommuting, and an earned days-off program. BCIT employees also enjoy a 35-hour work week.
This year’s commendation also included a mention of BCIT’s support for wellness and physical activity, which includes a newly renovated fitness facility, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, a quiet room for meditation and religious observance, and a sweat lodge hosted by Aboriginal Services.
Leadership training and a defined-benefits pension plan were likewise highlighted.
The editors of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers award select BC’s Top Employers using the same criteria as the national competition: Physical workplace; work atmosphere and communications; financial benefits and compensation; health and family-friendly benefits; vacation and personal time-off; employee engagement and performance; training and skills development; and community involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
