Gene Haas Foundation supports BCIT machining students

BCIT recently received a generous donation of $30,000 USD from an industry giant.

Haas Automation is known as one of the largest machine tool builders in the world. The company manufactures a complete line of computer numerically controlled (CNC) products. In 1999 the company decided to give back–and to support the next generation of machinists. The Gene Haas Foundation was created. Among its various charitable activities, it supports student-focused initiatives, introducing the next generation to careers in machine technology.

“Haas is a company that envisions the future of machinist trades training by implementing current technologies and anticipating the future needs of industry,” says Forrest Tittle, Dean of BCIT’s School of Energy.

BCIT was introduced to the Foundation in 2015 by Paul Krainer, the owner and president of Thomas Skinner, a Haas Factory Outlet—a company BCIT has been working with since the 1980s. Krainer saw an opportunity to support BCIT students in the Machinist Foundation and the CNC Machining Technician programs. Given Paul’s continued commitment to supporting education and his vision for the future of manufacturing, he thought BCIT and the Gene Haas Foundation would make a great fit. He was right.

In the short time since Paul made the introduction, the Gene Haas Foundation has donated more than $105,000 to the BCIT School of Energy. This money has funded approximately 26 student awards and bursaries. This latest contribution will recognize the achievements of our students in the upcoming year, as well as create even more opportunities to develop their skills.

“As the shortage of skilled workers continues to rise, I believe it is the responsibility of the business community to get involved and promote the education of trade and technology,” says Paul. “I take that commitment very seriously and am proud to support this great foundation and BCIT’s CNC Machining Technician and Machinist Foundation programs.”

With the support of The Gene Haas Foundation, BCIT’s students with the means, encouragement and motivation to lead successful careers from a highly-reputable industry partner.
