5 Back to School Tips for the New Semester

Happy New Year BCIT! Here are some tips to get a head start on the new semester.

Here are the links to the useful apps that were mentioned in this video:

  • BCIT Safety-Wise: BCIT’s app for disaster preparedness and campus information.
  • RenewPass: An app for one-tap or automatic uPass renewal.
  • ToDoist: Visually pleasing and easily organizable with tags (maybe for different classes) and colour codes. It’s cross-platform so you can view your to-do’s on your phone, your laptop, or your tablet.
  • LifeRPG: A to-do app with a twist! This is the app that I’m currently using and I’m loving it so far. Each to-do item is a mission where you can gain XP from completing them. You can even create a reward system where you can get reward points for every mission. I have my reward system set up so that I need to “earn” 30 and 60 minute chunks of “free time” to watch shows and browse online.
  • Google Calendar: Google Calendar allows you to create multiple calendars, so you can put your course schedule and important events all in one place. Another nice feature it that you can share calendars, which would be useful for organizing study groups with your lab set and scheduling meetings for group projects.

And here are links to where you can buy your textbooks:

  • BCIT Textbook Trade: For used/gently used books.
  • CraigslistFor used/gently used books.
  • Abe Books: For used/gently used books. Note that this is an American used book seller, so watch out for the shipping cost. That being said, this may still be a more affordable option for books that are harder to find at the Textbook Trade or at Craigslist.
  • Amazon.ca: For new and used books. Need books right away? Sign up for a 6 month trial of Amazon Student to have access to Amazon Prime, and enjoy having free 2 day shipping for the duration of the trial. There are also some exclusive deals for students, if you’re looking to save on textbooks and school supplies.
  • BCIT Bookstore: No time? No problem! Skip the lines. You can buy your books online, and pick it up at the campus of your choice.

If you are looking to sell your old textbooks, you can resell them in all the online bookstores that were mentioned in this post. And yes, that includes the BCIT Bookstore as well – they do buybacks if you still have the newest edition of your textbook.
