Jeux du Commerce or JDC West is known for being the biggest undergraduate business case competition in Western Canada. The competition is a three-day event that allows students to demonstrate their talents in academics, debate, social and athletics.
It has been over a decade since this competition has started and in January 2017, BCIT will be sending its first ever JDC West team to compete in Edmonton, Alberta. Although classified as a polytechnic institute rather than a university, co-captains Jessica Graham and Colin Li have worked hard to gain the approval of JDC West’s board of directors to let BCIT compete.
A little over a year ago, BCIT’s JDC West executive team started discussions with the JDC West board to consider BCIT’s School of Business as a competitor. In January 2016, BCIT was invited to observe the 2016 JDC West competition in Saskatchewan. Through the application process with the board from February to March 2016, BCIT has been formally accepted as the first polytechnic to compete in January 2017 with a half delegation of 30 students.
From June to September 2016, the BCIT’s JDC West executive team has been planning, organizing and holding tryouts for the team selection. I was one of the lucky few to be chosen, and I will be representing BCIT as part of the Academic: Entrepreneurship team.
My team mates are Justin Myong (on my right) and Mitchell Hong (on my left) as seen in the picture. We are lucky enough to have Ryan Whyte, BCIT’s very own Digital Manager as our coach.
Academic teams are made up of three people. Each team will be in lock down and given a fixed amount of time (3 hours) to prepare their case. The total presentation time is 20 minutes and each team is to present and defend their ideas in front of a panel of judges. The panel is made up of both industry judges and experts. The debate team, on the other hand, will have 30 minutes to review the facts before presenting their arguments. Students in the social team are set out to complete ten social challenges for 48 hours non-stop. Finally, the athletics team will be competing in two unique and different sports chosen by the JDC West board.
Currently, only BCIT business degree students are allowed to participate but co-captains Jessica and Colin are working towards getting an approval of the JDC West board to have our diploma students eligible to participate as well.
Competing in JDC West is understandably going to be a new experience for the students in our team, however it will be a chance for BCIT to showcase and make their mark. This endeavor will not be possible without your support.

BCIT provides a pathway for CST grades to get a Bachelor’s in Technology, two years full-time or about seven years part-time. They are also in the process of changing the degree to a Bachelor of Science to make it simpler to qualify for master’s programs. As far as I recall, it is in the proposal stage, so likely it will not happen soon.
