It was no small accomplishment in The Big Easy.
The BCIT Marketing Association (BCITMA) recently attended the American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. There were several high-profile competitions, and the students proved their worth.
Among their many accolades are the following:
- Top 10 Chapter Status for the second year in a row – a huge accomplishment considering there are more than 250 active AMA Chapters.
- 1st Place in The SABRE Business Simulation Competition
- This is the first time BCIT has taken the top prize in this competition. The SABRE team beat the second place school by an impressive margin of more than $100,000,000.
- 2nd Place – Individual Sales Competition
- 3rd Place – Hershey’s Case Competition Presentation.
- 91 schools in total submitted written cases in December 2015, with the top 10 selected to present in New Orleans to Hershey’s Marketing Executives. The prize came with $1,000.
- Sales Student of the Year – BCIT received an Honourable Mention
- Marketing Week – BCIT also received an Honourable Mention
Also, as recognition of last year’s excellent Professional Development initiatives, BCITMA club President Antoni Lauzer was invited to speak to attendees about how to improve professional development in their own chapters.
“It was a very rewarding experience seeing all the hard work and dedication that we received from all our members, finally pay off when we won top 10 chapter of the year,” says BCITMA President, Antoni Lauzer.
The BCITMA Faculty Advisor, Tracey Renzullo, agrees it was a large group effort: “The accomplishments of the club are a result of the year-long commitment of the entire club; only a small fraction of them – 23 – had the opportunity to attend the conference.”
“The AMA annual conference was a fantastic experience,” says student Finn Handelman, who came 2nd in the Sales Competition. “Although it was a lot of hard work among all of the participating members of our chapter, it was an extremely rewarding experience to represent BCIT on such a large scale.”
The American Marketing Association boasts a membership of over 250 student clubs across North America. Historically, BCIT has been the only Canadian school to attend conference. This year, they were joined by BC neighbour, Capilano University.
“Being one of the only Canadian schools was a great way to represent our country and Institute,” says Handleman. “It was quite funny to meet so many people that had never met a Canadian, and being treated like a foreign figure was an interesting experience. Being able to network with them and see the cultural differences between areas of the US was fascinating!”
For the record, Capilano also brought home an award: Outstanding Chapter Plan.
