During the course of the MSc in Ecological Restoration Program (joint BCIT/SFU) our students work and research on a wide variety of ecological restoration projects. The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) defines ecological restoration as the “processof assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed.”
Restoration of natural or modified ecosystems are among the defining Nature based Solutions actions “that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits”. Importantly, the United Nations have declared 2021-2030 the decade of Ecological Restoration.
Current MSc research projects, supervised by Dr. Cohen-Fernandez include:
Fuller, W. “Black Locust Distribution and Management Recommendations for the Lower Columbia River Valley near Trail, BC.”
Glover, M. “Investigating bee presence and use in naturalized grassland buffer strips of stormwater systems in southwestern Winnipeg, Manitoba”
