Collaboration in Simulation
Healthcare is delivered to patients/clients, and communities in teams. It is essential for students to not only learn their professional role, but also begin to develop their understanding of their role as members of interprofessional teams. Interprofessionalism requires skills that are often not well developed in siloed academic classes. Simulation is an educational approach that provides healthcare students an opportunity to practice skills such as team work, role clarity, conflict resolution and leadership. High functioning teams translate into improved health care outcomes for patients. Participating in simulation, healthcare students have the opportunity to understand fellow professionals’ perspectives and learn how to collaborate with those from disciplines outside their own. The transfer of these interprofessional skills into practice translates to better prepared, competent team members in the clinical settings improving patient care.
