GIS data layers

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become pervasive across all industries and institutions. If you have used Google Maps to find the route from your home to a restaurant, for example, you have used a very simple form of GIS. A GIS is a combination of mapping software, digital maps, and databases and the processes of combining maps with databases to produce models, maps, and tables for decision-making.

The BCIT GIS Program has been around for more than 30 years, providing quality education in the use of ESRI ArcGIS software, image processing, spatial databases, web programming and much more.

GIS Info Session

Are you thinking of getting into a GIS career?  A GIS Info session was held on Wednesday, Nov 3, 2021 online.  It was recorded and you can watch it here.

Our Current Students

In these pages you can find out about our current batch of students including their interests in GIS.  We have 45 Full-Time students register each year, starting in September and finishing their GIS education in May-June of the following year.

We Need Project and Practica Sponsors

Our students need to complete a PROJECT or a PRACTICUM in the Winter/Spring terms for a Sponsor.  Every Fall they have to find that Sponsor.  The BCIT GIS Practicum or Project offers a valuable opportunity for sponsors to play a role in GIS technology education while benefiting from the student’s knowledge and skills. There is no cost to the sponsor for a GIS Practicum or Project. Liability for students will be covered under the Institutes Coverage For Students On Approved Industry Project Practicums.  To find out more about being a sponsor, please click on the Sponsor link at the top of this page.

Our Past Students

At the top of this page, there is also a link to previous years’ GIS students.  You may want to view their web pages, and read about the projects or practica they completed.   This could give you some ideas for a potential project for this year’s students, or may give you a lead on a potential employee for your company or government agency.
