Advanced Training for Wildlife Crime Scene Investigators

Instructors conducting necropsy on dead wildlifeA practical training seminar presented by the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association (NAWEOA) designed for state and federal wildlife officers and investigators will be presented May 14-16, 2013. The topics covered by a team of experienced field orientated presenters include: time of death estimates based on decomposition stage analysis, forensic entomology basics and collection protocols, field firearms and ammunition examination techniques, necropsy presentation and field demonstration, the basics of forensic DNA analysis and tissue collection protocols, forensic geology basics and collection protocols, postmortem characteristics of fish for time of death estimates, raptor electrocution case history presentation, writing the affidavit, and location and availability of resources for forensic analysis. The last day will include scenarios with carcasses that will draw elements from the various topics covered during the seminar.

Registration deadline extended to April 1st. This fifth annual seminar will be held at the Double Arrow Lodge in Seeley Lake, Montana. For more information, please visit the NAWEOA website.

Practicum and Graduation Project Opportunity with ICBC

Many cars waiting in trafficThe Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is currently seeking Crime and Intelligence Analysis students to conduct open source intelligence investigations (as a practicum) and also to complete some research in fraud detection and investigation (as a graduation project). Both positions are currently planned to start in March 2013.

Open Source Intelligence Investigations practicum (FSCT 0000)

This practicum will:

  • Be 3 months long
  • Require 2 students working two different shifts (Mon and Wed OR Tue and Thu)
  • Be a fixed schedule of 08:00–16:00 or 09:00–17:00
  • Be under the supervision of the SIU Manager John Edwards (or delegate)

During this practicum, the students will be

  • Conducting open source analysis
  • Documenting the search results
  • Writing a final report, and
  • Meeting with investigation staff to support ongoing investigations

  • February 15th – Web preview (You can see the Spring/Summer 2013 courses online, but can’t register for them yet)
  • February 17th – Web registration opens (You can start registering online)
  • February 18th – General registration opens (You can now register by any method)

So go ahead and plan for your next semester and get ready to register before important courses fill up!

Audio Transcription Specialist Job Opportunity

Position: Contract / Temporary
Pay Rate: Contract rate of $60.00 per hour of transcribed audio; rate may be increased for poor quality audio.

Duties
Responsibilities are to produce accurate, verbatim typed transcripts from audio files. The audio files provided will contain explicit details of investigations, including topics that are very sensitive in nature. A variety of equipment & software will be used to transcribe digital audio formats. Related duties may also be assigned.  This position is on a contract/casual basis, and as such hours of work will be flexible.  A work schedule will be defined at a later date with the successful candidate.  The approximate hours per week will vary based on the transcription load. All work must be conducted onsite at Blackstone Forensics’ secure lab located in North Vancouver.
