Forensic Identification Technician Job Opportunity in Surrey

Job Status: Full Time Regular

Overview: The Forensic Identification Technician reports to the Administrative Services Manager and is responsible for performing technical work related to forensic video and will be required to provide administrative support to staff and management.

Scope: This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing confidential and sensitive forensic information requests. Typical duties include reviewing and recovering image and video evidence from different devices and media, as well as converting, enhancing, concealing and preparing images and video for presentation and/or court disclosure. In addition, the incumbent will act as a resource and provide guidance to staff as well as respond to inquiries and liaise with internal and external agencies.

Requirements: The Forensic Identification Technician will have a Diploma in video technology, broadcast television or a discipline relevant to the field of forensic video analysis plus a minimum of 2 years’ related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. This position requires completing and maintaining the relevant level of RCMP Security Clearance.

Bachelor of Technology Research Day

Research posterBCIT successfully wrapped up another round of graduation research projects at the  Forensic Science & Technology Bachelor of Technology Research Day. The event was a success with 25 presenters and over 100 attendees taking in the latest in forensic science research and industry trends. Topics ranged from the involvement of organized crime in container traffic in Vancouver ports, to forensic facial reconstruction, and social media evidence. The daylong event featured some of the brightest young minds in forensic science presenting graduation projects culminating nearly 4 years of hard work in the Bachelor of Technology Program in Forensic Investigation. BCIT plans to hold another presentation day in August 2013 so keep your eye on our website for specific dates and times.

ER Staff to Train in Recognizing Signs of Human Trafficking

A girl saying no to assaultTara Wilkie a former Forensics student and current instructor in Forensic Health Sciences, is quoted in an article in the Metro News concerning a grant that will help frontline healthcare workers identify the signs of human trafficking:

“We know that at some point trafficked persons will receive medical care, however at present time healthcare professionals are not equipped to recognize or offer the appropriate support to a trafficked person in a healthcare setting…”

The article continues on to describe how staff might recognize the signs of human trafficking in the ER.

The primary objective of the research project is to compile relevant spatial statistics from academic articles that would help the IDRU streamline the identification process. Throughout 2013 it is anticipated that the IDRU may require up to 4 students to collaborate on this project.
