Overview
The Crime Analyst position specializes in research work involving the application of complex research techniques to support criminal investigative activities, operational programs and crime reduction strategies.

Scope
The successful candidate will provide statistical, tactical and strategic crime analysis services and intelligence information to management. You would be required to review police occurrence files to determine immediate crime problems and patterns of criminal activity; evaluate and validate intelligence information gathered from various sources; and develop and maintain comprehensive files, records and documentation. The Crime Analyst will also deliver presentations, briefings, and situation reports on crime trends and related matters. In addition, the successful candidate will establish and maintain working relationships with members, staff and external agencies.

We’re seeking two investigations operations analysts to work closely with key members of the department to ensure investigations are managed in an effective and efficient manner. As an investigations operations analyst, you’ll have extensive experience managing disclosure packages and a thorough understanding of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Criminal Justice Branch. You’ll use Major Case Management (MCM) principles in your work and provide ongoing MCM software training and user support to the investigations team. You’ll also provide tactical and strategic data analysis to the director and manager of Investigations, and work in a team environment to assist with developing the initial structure of the investigation file.

Forensics Department Highlighted in BCIT Magazine

Steen Hartsen dons a white lab coat and blue rubber gloves to test DNA samples.The Forensic department was recently featured by BCIT Magazine, a 30-minute TV news program prepared and delivered by BCIT Journalism students that is broadcast weekly on Shaw TV and online. This episode highlighted Forensic Science and featured a brief interview with Steen Hartsen, technical staff member in our DNA lab, instructor, and coordinator of our CSI Academy for high school students, on his career path and how his degree at BCIT helped him get where he is today. String tied around finger as a reminderDon’t forget… For those of you looking for more information about BCIT Forensic Science and Technology programs, please join us at our information session on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Downtown Campus starting at 5:30pm.

At the info session, each Program Coordinator does a general presentation about their option, giving you tips on how to apply, when to apply, and what the career prospects are in their area. After the presentation, the attendees are divided up according to the option they’re most interested in and then are given more in-depth information from their particular Program Coordinator. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions specific to your circumstances and background, to see if your career aspirations line-up with what we have to offer.

Crime Scene Mapping Using UAV Technology

A drone against blue skyTechnology once strictly reserved for military applications, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) which are also commonly referred to as “drones,” are now being used for multitude of non-military applications such as law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, and other fields where the advantage of having an aerial perspective is invaluable.

BCIT Forensic Science & Technology is currently investigating how this technology can be used in a teaching environment and the direct application to aerial photography and 3D modeling of complex crime scenes.  However, before using this type of technology for commercial gain or benefit, strict guidelines put out by Transport Canada for the use of UAVs must be adhered too; including the issuing of Special Flight Operations Certificates (SFOC). This would include such things as; a detailed flight plan, flight location, times and environment, risk mitigation, and proof of liability insurance as just a few of the details that need to be outlined before an applicant is able to use this type of technology legally.

Forensic Health Sciences Instructors in Vancouver Sun

A recent article in the Vancouver Sun discusses Aimee, Tara, and Larena’s work in Surrey and Abbotsford emergency rooms and how they’re using what they’ve learned to identify trafficking victims and ensure they get the support they need.

New Internet and Social Media Investigative Techniques Workshop

Blue, illustrated people with lines linking them to laptops.BCIT Forensics is please to offer a new workshop in internet and social media investigative techniques, FSCT 0087, starting December 1, 2014.

This two day, hands-on workshop will provide students with the latest techniques used to effectively gather online information for investigative purposes relating to persons, companies, and other assets. Students will be introduced to the methods of gathering online intelligence through social media platforms, search engines, and dark web searches. In addition, students will learn how to assess potential counter-intelligence concerns. Particular emphasis will be placed on heightened awareness and the “paper trail” investigators may leave behind when using internet investigation tools. Approaches to maintain privacy and security when carrying out online investigations will also be explored and students will be introduced to a variety of online search methodologies.

Winter 2015 Schedule Now Available

I recently uploaded our Winter term 2015 course schedule to our website, so you can use it to plan your course load for January – March 2015. BCIT has updated the way it displays courses online, hopefully making it easier for you guys to find and enroll in them.

Some important dates to remember:

  • October 24th – Web preview (You can see the Winter 2015 courses online, but can’t register for them yet)
  • October 26th – Web registration opens (You can start registering online)
  • October 27th – General registration opens (You can now register by any method)

So go ahead and plan for your next semester and get ready to register before important courses fill up!
