FSCT 8482 National Security
FSCT 8482 National Security Analysis course will be offered by Mr. Bob Young and Cyril Sweetville: Both
have extensive experience in National Security related matters and are going to be sharing with students
their experience. Mr. Young will be covering range topics such but not limited to the role and mandate
of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). The highlight of Mr. Young’s sharing is the in depth
discussion of the Toronto 18 case. Mr. Sweetville will explore the RCMP’s role in national security, its
relationship with CSIS, intelligence investigations versus criminal investigations, the radicalization
process, critical infrastructure, and also case studies of national security matters (i.e. terrorism events,
foreign actor influence and departmental security considerations for government organization) Mr.
Sweetville will also get the students to do some practical work by taking an issue, ideology or
organization and prepare a brief “strategic analysis” of that topic and how this affects Canada’s national
security (this is to get them to apply the analysis skills they have garnered in this program. At the
completion of this course, students will have a much better appreciation of national security related
matters in Canada, its trajectory, as well as developing threats and how to conduct analysis, and report
on those threats to national security decision makers.
The course is currently offered January 6 to March 31 from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm online only.
