BC Team Gives Name Back to Unidentified Bodies

February 11, 2015 by cingram

Photo of bones from a mass graveA recent article in The Province newspaper highlights the great work of the BC Coroners Service, specifically, the Identification and Disaster Response Unit (IDRU):

“Recently BC investigators have been closing more cases quickly — and closing more old, cold cases, too — says Inkster, who’s quick to credit that success to the innovative and award-winning IDRU program set up by his predecessor, Stephen Fonseca.”

Although BCIT isn’t mentioned here, our faculty (Dr. Dean Hildebrand, Jason Moore, and Steen Hartsen) work behind the scenes to conduct the forensic DNA analysis that lead to these breakthroughs. This work at our institute, along with the provincial DNA database Dr. Hildebrand helped establish, makes BC a leader in this type of humanitarian work.
