Position Overview
The West Vancouver Police Department has an immediate opening for a temporary, full-time civilian Crime Analyst for approximately one year. The position is expected to be filled in November of 2014.
Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for the specialized work of researching and disseminating information related to criminal activity to support administrative and operational staff in the planning and deployment of resources. The primary duties for this position are:
- Researching, compiling, analyzing, and mapping crime trends and patterns;
- Disseminating information related to criminal activity;
- Assisting operational, investigative, and administrative staff in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention, intervention, and suppression of criminal activities;
- Liaising with law enforcement agencies, while maintaining effective communication with a variety of internal and external contacts;
- Providing regular written and oral presentations to the Police Board, West Vancouver District Council and a variety of other external stakeholders;
- Presenting bi-weekly COMPStat reports with recommendations based on analytical findings;
- Participating in other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
Education requirements include: A University Degree in criminology, geography, forensic sciences or related discipline. Competitive candidates will also have additional courses, certification or a degree from the BCIT Forensic Investigation Program (or equivalent) with a specialization in Crime and Intelligence Analysis. Note: the minimum competency courses from BCIT are: Tactical Analysis, Crime Mapping, Applied Research Methods & Statistics in Crime Analysis and Introduction to Crime and Intelligence Analysis.
The preferred candidate will possess: a minimum of two-years related work experience in a police environment or criminal justice system; considerable knowledge of research, statistical and analytical principles, practices, procedures, methods and techniques; a strong command of the English language and have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts; and have the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Short listed candidates may be required to undergo a crime analysis, knowledge based exam prior to being interviewed. The successful applicant may be required to undergo a security background check and polygraph examination. Applicants with a valid and current security clearance with a Canadian police service will be exempt from this process.
