FSCT 7843 – Pediatric Examiner Sexual Violence Core Education
This 45 hour comprehensive course is designed to broaden the expertise of nurses and physicians who currently provide or will be providing pediatric sexual violence medical evaluation. The focus of this Canadian-based, basic to intermediate level training will be on caring for the sexually abused pediatric population. This evidence-based course will be interactive, case-based and provide practical opportunities for clinicians to obtain feedback on different practice elements including documentation..

Tanya Deurvorst Smith is a Nurse Practitioner-Paediatrics and has been with the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect program at SickKids hospital since 1994. As a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE-P) Ms Smith provides medical evaluation to child and youth victims of sexual abuse and assault. Ms Smith provides leadership in the area of pediatric sexual abuse/assault for the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Centers. Ms Smith has developed and provides training nationally to various members of the multidisciplinary team in the area of pediatric sexual abuse. Ms Smith has written guidelines on child sexual abuse for the World Health Organization. Ms Smith has been qualified as an expert witness in Ontario Provincial court. She is cross-appointed at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing , the University of Toronto and is an adjunct lecturer in the Nurse Practitioner-Paediatric Program.
Nancy Horan, BScN Nursing with 25 years experience, Forensic nurse for 11 years with IAFN certification in SANE-A and SANE-P. Nancy currently manages the VIPP program at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario, which provides services for adult victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and acute assessment, consultation and follow-up for children who have been physically or sexually abused. Nancy also manages a community based rape crisis centre for women disclosing historical sexual abuse. Nancy has lectured locally, nationally and internationally on various aspect of sexual violence. She frequently guest lectures at Seneca and Cambrian College as well at Laurentian University in the forensics and nursing programs. Nancy co- facilitates the Canadian National Pediatric Abuse Training and serves as a clinical practicum mentor. Nancy also has a diploma in therapeutic recreation and is working towards her masters in Health Sciences. On a personal note Nancy survives in a household filled with testosterone raising two boys, now 16 and 20 and a 21 year marriage to her husband Dave.
