Practicum with the Identification and Disaster Response Unit of the BC Coroners Service *New Deadline*

The BC Coroners service is looking to create a pool of qualified candidates to assist with an ongoing research project. The primary objective of the research project is to compile relevant spatial statistics from academic articles that would help the IDRU streamline the identification process. Throughout 2013 it is anticipated that the IDRU may require up to 4 students to collaborate on this project.

Responsibilities:
Conduct research, interpret, prepare, analyze and disseminate information in order to compile spatial statistics for the BC Coroners Service:

  1. Understand the role of the Identification and Disaster Response Unit (IDRU) within the BC Coroners Service;
  2. Find academic articles that would support various location patterns among population groups;
  3. Derive spatial statistics on average distances travelled between the last seen alive location of a missing person and where their associated remains were found;
  4. Research different accidental death, suicide and homicide protocols (100 hours);
  5. Develop methodology based on academic research;
  6. Data entry into UVIS/PLASS databases (100 hours) – TBD.

Educational requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, science, sociology, anthropology, mathematics, geography; or a minimum of two years of experience in a law enforcement agency; and currently enrolled in the BCIT Crime and Intelligence Analysis or Forensic Science option.

Preferred Experience:
Training and/or certification in crime analysis methods, including ArcGIS or mapping software; and prior experience in a law enforcement crime analysis capacity is preferred. A strong research background is necessary.
