Practicum and Graduation Project Opportunity with ICBC

Many cars waiting in trafficThe Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is currently seeking Crime and Intelligence Analysis students to conduct open source intelligence investigations (as a practicum) and also to complete some research in fraud detection and investigation (as a graduation project). Both positions are currently planned to start in March 2013.

Open Source Intelligence Investigations practicum (FSCT 0000)

This practicum will:

  • Be 3 months long
  • Require 2 students working two different shifts (Mon and Wed OR Tue and Thu)
  • Be a fixed schedule of 08:00–16:00 or 09:00–17:00
  • Be under the supervision of the SIU Manager John Edwards (or delegate)

During this practicum, the students will be

  • Conducting open source analysis
  • Documenting the search results
  • Writing a final report, and
  • Meeting with investigation staff to support ongoing investigations

Fraud Detection and Investigation Graduation Project (FSCT 8611/21/31)

Some BTech Crime and Intelligence students may be required to complete a practicum. Currently ICBC’s Special Investigation Unit is seeking someone to conduct analysis of data to identify fraud patterns. The scope of research includes, but not limited to:

  • Staged vehicle crashes, pedestrian injuries, bicycle crashes
  • Improving the quality and efficiency of open source investigations (data request and analysis, proof of concept utilizing Maltego open source investigation tool, and data mining software for trends analysis)
  • Business case development for a dedicated data miner or data base administrator for
  • fraud detection

This graduation research project will:

  • Require 2 students working two different shifts (Mon and Wed OR Tue and Thu)
  • Be a fixed schedule of 08:00–16:00 or 09:00–17:00
  • Be under the supervision of the SIU Manager John Edwards (or delegate)

Research methods will include trends analysis, geographic analysis, and hotspot analysis. Other research methods may be available depending upon data available and research topic.

NOTE: The practicum and graduation research projects will require successful candidates to work ICBC’s Surrey Central Services office at 13072 – 88th Ave.

Both positions are subject to due diligence check by ICBC and approval from the ICBC and Patrick Neal, Program Coordinator.
