Shanghai Alley: Birthplace of an Industry
Once a refuge for Chinese workers seeking relief from their harsh living conditions, the opium dens of Shanghai Alley opened their doors to non-Chinese clients seeking similar relief. So began a drug trade in Vancouver that’s now the #1 crime problem in the city. Sins of the City expert Catherine Rose, and SFU criminology professor Dr. Neil Boyd take a critical look at the history of drugs in Vancouver: how it started, how it grew, and
who it affects.
