Tipping the Scales of Justice is a conference hosted by the Network to Eliminate Violence in Relationships (NEVR) that features an exciting lineup of speakers who will explore the role of our criminal justice system in supporting the safety of women, children and families dealing with violence. Cory Heavener, Head of the Provincial Office of Domestic Violence, will present on the provincial plan to ensure the best policies and practices for supporting families dealing with domestic violence. Associate Chief Judge Gurmail Gill will explore the many difficulties that arise when dealing with cases of domestic violence in court. Vancouver lawyer Geoffrey Cowper will discuss his recommendations for improving the efficiency and efficacy of British Columbia’s justice system. Simon Thompson will speak from his experience as Abbotsford Crown Counsel about the challenges faced when prosecuting domestic violence cases. Speakers will be followed by a roundtable discussion, involving all attendees, of what approach by the justice system is best to ensure the safety and security of women, children and families experiencing violence.
