Women in music we love

In honour of International Women’s day last Monday, here are some artists I keep in heavy rotation and you should too.

Starting off with the MOST obvious one, Beyoncé

A woman is shown leaning back and singing into a microphone, surrounded by smoke
Should not even have to explain this one, can’t you just tell by how you would be driven to the end of the earth if you did not like her? It’s basically being touched by god if you work on a song with her. Starting off as a part of the iconic girl group Destiny’s Child, she was always the diamond of the group. I also love that Beyoncé’s Wikipedia says her instrument Is her voice, which it totally is just sounds funny for some reason. This woman has influenced so many other women in music and her personality just makes It all the better. So anyways Hey Siri play Don’t Hurt Yourself by Beyoncé.

Queen of Controversy, Lady Gaga

A pale-skinned woman holding her hands crossed and intertwined in the air. She has yellow hair and wears a low-cut bodysuit. Her chest is marked with red liquid.

I don’t know about you, but my parents did not like Lady Gaga she was the devil’s music but hey, call me lucy then. I mean the woman had music journalists losing their minds with her meat dresses, sexy nun dresses and rumours of her gender. I know over the years her album ArtPop well, flopped when first released. Her music since then is very different from her sound in 2010 but. When it came to performances, choreography and outfits she checked every box on the talent list. Gaga was never afraid of doing what she wants, and she made that clear when she wore a dress made out of meat and boy did animal activists rip their teeth out of anger. She had a huge influence on pop music and paved the way for weirdness and LGBTQ. She is the definition of Avant-Garde.

Mother of Rap, Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj & Little Mix live @ MTV EMAs 2018.png
I know there’s this argument about who the queen of rap is well let’s put it like this, how much more fame would Nicki get if she were a man. Yeah, exactly misogyny is crazy in hip hop. I know a lot of older heads call her music garbage meanwhile they listen to Eminem’s new stuff where he  just goes “cinnamon, vitamin, feminine all men are synonyms” (read that in his voice you’ll get it). Anyways, it’s no doubt she’s got punchlines and well written bars but people love to say her music sucks. As a woman, when you want to feel like the baddest thing in the world, you wanna turn on Nicki Minaj. One of her BEST features is on Kanye West’s Monster which features Jay Z and Rick Ross, and nobody and I mean NOBODY listens to that not wanting to listen to her, she bodied every man on that song.

Miss bas gal do it all, Rihanna

Rihanna Diamonds World Tour 2013 (Cropped).png
Although she has become this mogul and changed the makeup world forever, her music still resides strong on the charts. You could not turn on a radio back then without hearing Rihanna. She is also loved because of how beautiful she is I mean my god have you seen her? No wonder Drake wrote songs about her. ANTI was just a masterpiece to the concept, visual and interactive album, she’s made from the divine heaven.

Sweet Sweet, Ariana Grande

Dangerous Woman Tour2.jpg
Not only being one of the best characters on Victorious her evolution in music has been incredible. She had all the Mariah Carey fans in shambles as she was just getting stronger, and Mariah grew weaker. She’s an incredible singer-songwriter, and she’s got an amazing voice. This girl is also incredibly strong after what she endured with her fans and losing her Ex Mac Miller, she is an angel, that must be protected.

Hot Girl Meg, taller than all your favourite rappers

Megan Thee Stallion at Howard University Springfest 2019 01.png

When it comes to getting Beyoncé featured on a song with you, from the looks of it always takes some time but Megan, she got the golden feature in no time. Out of my favourite rappers she is one of my top 3. Her mom used to actually take her to the studio with her and she grew up around music and started writing when she was 16. She gained her popularity on social media with freestyles that she uploaded, and they were fire. There really is nothing better than a good freestyle it’s refreshing to hear. Right out the start she was recognized and loved by everyone! I don’t know a single person who has not liked Megan yet.

The ever so weird, Doja Cat

Doja Cat performing in October 2018.
She’s been making music since 2012 but went viral with her song Moo, and everyone loved the memes. With the rise of TikTok her music has been everywhere, as it should. She’s been hit a bit with her controversial tweets and video chats scandal, but we have all moved past that. Her voice is also raspy, and it just adds that flavour to her music. You also just gotta love her carefree personality and she grew up on the internet so she’s super funny as well.

Soft and Sweet, BANKS

Banks @ Space 15 Twenty 07 14 2019 (48501427087) (cropped).jpg
God will her music either make you cry or go into a god complex and want to rule the world. I was able to see her live back when ya know things were fine. She is a beautiful singer and puts so much passion into her performances . Her style is mostly alternative but also Pop and RnB. There is not a single song on a BANKS album that I would skip, and even though she makes great crying music, she’s also got songs like Trainwreck and Goddess that just go so hard at the gym.

Heavenly voice, Rina Sawayama

Rina Sawayama London 2018 3 (cropped).png
Coming all the way from London is singer-songwriter Rina, and god her music is beautiful. She takes influence from the 2000s Y2K music era and artists like Christina Aguilera. Her electro pop sound mixed with heavy guitar and Christina Aguilera is insane and perfect. She is definitely an artist to watch she’s gaining popularity fast; Elton John even calls her to check up on her because he loves her music. So, if Elton likes it you will too.

So thank you pretty ladies in music I love you all.

Is the Tea too Hot to handle Royal Family?

Meghan Markle would be loved if Diana was still with us.

Princess diana bristol 1987 02.jpg
If you have not seen the interview Oprah did with Meghan Markle, you’re going to want to watch it. I personally do not understand the whole “rOyAlS” things like we are still living in the 1800s, but I did understand how terribly they treated Meghan.

The irony in it all is that the similarities between the treatment of Princess Diana and Meghan are way too similar, it is as if its fate.

Diana visits Halifax.jpg

Starting off with who Princess Diana was, which I doubt you don’t not know, but anyways.

Princess Diana was born into the British royalty and grew up close to the royal family. Her parents John Spencer and Frances Kydd both divorced in 1967 and this deeply affected Diana. Diana lived with her mother during the time of the divorce. Shortly after this John Spencer won custody of Diana and she moved in with her father and mother-in-law. It should be noted Diana describes her stepmother as a bully. She describes her childhood as unhappy, always having nannies and very unstable.

President Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, Prince Charles, and Princess Diana in the Yellow Oval Room.jpg

Although coming from British nobility Diana worked many part-time jobs when she shared a flat in London with two of her friends. One of her last jobs before she married Prince Charles was as a nursery school assistant.

Charles first met Diana when she was 16 years old, which talk about white van kind of guy. Despite the 12-year age gap, Charles was fond of Diana because she was different and made a lot of noise and he appreciated that. In the press Charles was known as a playboy and he got around let me tell you. The royal family wanting to end that spectacle, liked Diana as a choice for Charles as she was a pure girl with no news breaking past behind her

On February 6th, 1981 he asked Diana to marry him, shocked even on how she said yes so fast with all the duties that would soon be put at her shoulders. Their marriage was the first ever royal family wedding which was broadcasted. Although being a fairy tale story any girl would hope for this was not entirely the case for Diana.

John Travolta and Princess Diana.jpg
Just like Meghan, Diana was loved by people but still heavily criticized behind closed doors. As a royal family you imagine they have so many rules and traditions you must follow however, Diana did not shy away from not following those rules.

Diana would be seen out showing her shoulders, wearing black, dark colours on her nails and everything in which a royal was advised against doing, she did. Diana also broke many rules with having her kids attend public school and do fun things that a non-royal would do.

Harry and Meghan on Christmas Day 2017 (cropped).jpg
Now onto the subject of Meghan Markle it is not shocking to me, all the things in which happened behind closed doors. It does not shock me because she would be one of the first mixed races marrying into a what is a white cult to me.

Meghan while being a “commoner” comes from a well-educated background on top of her acting career. Meghan grew up mostly with her mother as her parents divorced when she was younger.

Growing up Meghan was always involved in women’s rights and very much believed in equality. When she was 11 years old, she wrote a letter to Procter and Gamble to gender neutralize a dish washing soap commercial that ran on TV, after she wrote the letter, they listened to her and changed the commercial.

Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams (Paley Center 'Suits').jpg

Meghan earned her bachelor’s degree with a double major in theater and international studies from Northwestern’s School of Communication. Now onto her acting it was not always simple. Having lighter skin she had difficulties getting roles because she was either “not black enough for black ones, or not white enough for white ones.”

So, to support herself during her acting gigs she worked as a freelance calligrapher and taught bookbinding. She landed her first on screen role as a nurse on General Hospital from then on, she made a series of appearances like on CSI: NY, Get him to the Greek, Horrible bosses and more. Meghan’s first major role was on the hit series Suits which, great show by the way. She played Rachel Zane who worked as a paralegal and eventually becoming an attorney on the show.

Now onto the tea that was split (no British joke intended here).

Meghan and Harry began their relationship in June of 2016, in which they were both introduced by a mutual friend. Their engagement was announced on November 27th, 2017 by Harry’s father. The announcement of their engagement was huge, and it received lots of positive feedback and a picture of Meghan sitting in front of the palace when she was younger, went viral as it was the perfect fairy tale story or was it.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle visit Belfast’s Crown Liquor Saloon (40263263684).jpg
Although receiving lots of positive feedback from the world and people loving her, the UK press were a bunch of hyenas just scavenging for whatever they could say.

Most people are aware of how crazy the UK press is, and I am sure Prince Harry knew that well, but Meghan didn’t. In the interview she tells Oprah she had never even googled the guy which I find hard to believe, come on its prince fricken harry. She also might have said this to not seem like a gold digger which, understandable.

Meghan Markle in 2013 New York Fashion Week (34567271204).jpg

The interview itself was up for interpretation because you can tell they didn’t want to reveal too much, probably in fear of what could happen.

Although becoming a part of the commonwealth which is diverse and the palace having mental health campaigns and charities, they did not give a breath of their voice to help Meghan.

They were always told to say “no comment” to any question, Meghan admitted to Oprah that she was silenced. And while the media was just ripping her mental health apart there was nothing she could do or say. She would receive phone calls from friends who were extremely concerned about the words that were being said, but there was nothing she could do.

And to her bad luck, she was in the press daily, even being harassed for just HOLDING HER BABY BUMP?? Which is insane and not only misogynistic, because you have to hate women to write that, but also lies in with the hidden racism because those same comments were not made about Kate Middleton when she was photographed, doing the same thing. And all of these things prevented her to eat lunch with a friend or go outside because “she was being talked about too much already.”

That’s a funny statement because then, why did nobody try to stop it? As there’s this secret agreement between the palace and the press, why was nothing done to help this poor pregnant woman.

During her pregnancy she struggled with depression having thoughts of suicide to the point she forced herself to attend an event because she told Harry, she was afraid of what she might do if she was left alone. That is heartbreaking, and the fact that she couldn’t do anything and was not being protected.

And then the worst of it all, discussing Archie’s skin tone.

My god! could you imagine If she was actually dark skinned, they would’ve never even let her walk through the door. Meghan told Oprah that there were several, not one, several, conversations of the concern of his skin tone. And if that meant he would get a title or protection. Prince Harry later revealed to Oprah that those comments were not made by either the queen or his grandfather. I don’t think the royal family had ANY idea of how genetics work, and this crazy thing called recessive genes, maybe you’ve heard of it.

The whole interview was heartbreaking to hear but I am sure Meghan was able to get some weight off her chest and at least able to say her piece freely and happily. If you have still not watched the interview I highly recommend watching because I am sure Meghan would love more and more support, she can receive.

And it is without a doubt, Diana is watching over Meghan

VanessiSpeaks: Rachel’s Story

Mariya better known as BabyTeeth is from the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver and was missing since January and was found not until Tuesday February 9th. Her mother Rachel is also from the Downtown Eastside and works with drugs users at VANDU. When Rachel found out her daughter was not seen in the community in weeks, like any mother she was freaking out. Rachel felt as though there was a lot more that could’ve been done to help find her daughter and this is what she has to say.

This is Part two to Mariya is found, in this second part we will finish listening to Rachel’s frustration and heartbreak of not knowing where her daughter could be. You will also get to hear about the horrible things that have happened to Rachel while living in the Downtown Eastside, as well as what she has to do to make ends meet.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

How many times will you just walk by?

You may have seen this tweet in the past couple of days and it started quite a conversation under the tweet.

If you read through the replies there’s lots of people who are sad and understanding of the issues homeless people face, but there is one common theme.

You always hear the argument “Oh don’t give a homeless person money they’ll just use it to buy drugs, cigarettes or alcohol.” Which come on man if you’re downing 10 beers during every Canucks game who are you to judge.

Homeless people are faced with a huge stigma that they are all drug addicts, which is not entirely true. People who end up homeless in this case being in the downtown east side, can be faced with many different problems which is why they’re homeless, not because they are drug addicts.

Lots of people in the downtown east side suffer from mental illness or trauma without having the money to get help and while they struggle with that yeah, they might turn to drugs can you imagine being depressed and not having a bed to sleep in? Yeah, you would probably take a snag at whiskey too.

There’s also a handful of youth that are kicked out of their home for being transgender or attracted to the same sex. No one ever deserves to be kicked out of their home especially a youth, but you even see teens sleeping on sidewalks.

So, how much longer will these issues continue? How any more times will you walk by and look away?

According to the City of Vancouver’s annual homeless report in 2020:

  • 2,095 residents identified as homeless
  • 547 were living on the street
  • 1,548 people were living in sheltered locations with no fixed address

All together that’s over four-thousand people without a stable home.

It’s understandable that not everyone can always have money to spare but when you can, treat them like humans, instead of people you just look away from.

When you can help, help as much as you can because these are people homeless during a pandemic.

Black Canadians to Remember

Although we don’t learn about it, Canada is full of black history. With the month of Black History still going, I bring you another story but this time on Black Canadians.

Mary Ann Shadd

Mary Ann Shadd.jpg

Mary was an American-Canadian anti-slavery activist, journalist, publisher, teacher and lawyer. She edited The Provincial Freeman established in 1853, which was published weekly in southern Ontario. Mary was the first black woman publisher in North America and the first woman publisher in Canada. Shadd founded the anti-slavery paper The Provincial Freeman, who’s slogan was “Devoted to antislavery, temperance and general literature.”

Henry “Harry” Jerome

Harry Jerome, statue, Vancouver.jpg

Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was a Canadian track and field sprinter and P.E teacher. In 1964 he won the bronze medal at the Olympics In Tokyo and set seven world records over the course of his career. In 1971 he was inducted into Canada’s sports Hall of Fame. If you take a stroll down to Stanley Park you’ll see a statue in his memory.

Portia May White

Portrait of White, taken in 1946 by Yousuf Karsh

Born in Nova Scotia back in 1911 she grew up singing in her father’s church choir in Halifax. Portia is known for becoming the first black Canadian singer to achieve international fame, and at the time it was difficult with the barriers that faced black women. Portia was declared a person of national historic significance by the Government of Canada and she was featured in a special issue of Millennium postage stamps.

Lincoln Alexander

Lincoln Alexander.jpg

Born in 1922 in Toronto, Ontario, was a Canadian lawyer who became the first black Member of Parliament in the House of Commons, the first black federal cabinet minister. First black Chair of the Worker’s compensation Board and 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991. Although being involved in a world of white politics he did not shy away from voting against his parties or speaking out about racism.

Rosemary Brown

Rosemary Brown Canada.jpg

Born in 1930 in Jamaica, she later moved to Canada in 1951 to study social work at McGill University in Montreal. Upon attending McGill she studied at UBC here in Vancouver and earned her Master’s in Social Work. She served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly here in B.C as part of the New Democratic Party from 1977 to 1986, making her the first black Canadian woman to be elected to a Canadian provincial legislature.

And this is just a short list of many.

Is life passing by?

I just want to relax sincerely, someone who is sleepy.

For those who are about to spend their second birthday during the pandemic, first happy birthday and second, you’ll be okay.

I could be the only one or maybe you feel this way too, but I feel like, life is just passing by. Now yeah this could just be an age crisis or mental issues but let’s ignore all of that for a second. When I’ve been out driving to run an arrand or go to work, I feel as though I am missing out on something.

There is a different type of peace that comes with walking to where you need to go and you can enjoy your surroundings, even if that means some drunk guy yelling at you on commercial drive. Of course, I am grateful I have the accessibility to a car where others don’t that isn’t what I am getting at, so let me get to the point.

Why are we all in a rush?

When you wake up in the morning and have to force yourself out of bed even though your body is so tired, why is that normal? No honestly, why must 50% of our lives be spent working in order to pay basic living needs. The boomers really had it easy back then a house would cost those guys a sack of hay.

As a student there’s always that burnout you face halfway through your semester or in your first week there’s no shame in that. Even when you’re doing your assignments are you rushing to get them finished so you can enjoy some relaxation? Maybe and that’s totally fine because we’re humans and we all get tired.

During all the time you have to spare are you trying to enjoy it as fast as you can?

And now you can’t even go on a vacation at all, no Hawaii, no Disney and no Mexico spring break.

I used to go visit my dad’s side of the family every 2-3 years and it would be 2 weeks of no cell service just existing with no worries. That was honestly a huge privilege that I would just go there and disconnect from life and the way that taking that trip would refresh me yearly? It’s like I’m a computer with outdated software.

So if you feel like things are going too fast or your stuck in the 4 walls of your room, at least you aren’t alone.

Half-time this Weeknd

A quick lesson with a long-time fan before the big show!

The Weeknd at Massey Hall October 17, 2013 amber lighting.jpg

This year the Super bowl half-time will be headlined by Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd. As a fan since 2014, it is always so surreal to see your favourite artist grow into one of the biggest names in music today.

That being said I thought I would give a quick backstory so you can know who he is before watching the show.

FEQ July 2018 The Weeknd (44778856382) (cropped).jpg
By Nicolas Padovani

The Weeknd was born in Toronto, Ontario and grew up in Scarborough. Both of his parents were immigrants from Ethiopia, and he grew up as an only child. His parents ended up splitting up and his father wasn’t very present from then, so Abel was raised by his grandmother and mother.

He is known for his lyrics on drugs, addiction, depression and relationships in his music, and all those lyrics come from the experiences from his past. He’s a pretty big smoker but did eventually move on to harder drugs and even stole to fund his drug habits. He mentions this in one of his songs Tell Your Friends;

“Me and Lamar would rob a ***** for his Jordan’s, and flip it just to get these ho*s another nose fix”

Yeah, you get the idea.

At first, he uploaded 3 songs onto YouTube under a fake name which gained a lot of attention. After this he started to release music on his own website and his mixtapes would be free to download back in 2011.

His very first release was the EP House of Balloons and it was a hit, the song House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls single handily influenced many RnB songs you hear today.

After the release of House of Balloons then came the EPs Thursday and Echoes of Silence. His music gained a lot of popularity and was mentioned in Pitchfork and The New York Times, at the time he refused to do interviews and would only use Twitter to communicate with fans.

The Weeknd by David Hwang.jpg

He did his very first show at the Mod Club in Toronto and 6ix god Drake was there in attendance. Drake was a fan and eventually took him on tours as an opening act and Abel even wrote 4 songs off of the Take Care album, and did some vocals as well.

During all of this he was getting LOTS of offers from record labels but ended up signing with Republic Records, yes, he definitely refused the Drake offer too. Upon signing he re-released all of his 3 EPs onto the album known as Trilogy with 4 brand news tracks featured on the album. The album did numbers and went platinum by the RIAA.

The Weeknd - Trilogy.png

Now its 2013 and he came out with one of my top 3 albums KissLand. This album wasn’t as big as Trilogy at the time and he faced some criticism from fans for the different sound and album name, but nonetheless it was loved by critics.

After Kiss Land he kind of took a break and would only release remixes or be featured on songs. He later announced the King of The Fall tour after the release of Often and King of The Fall on SoundCloud (one of his best songs btw).

The Weeknd - Kiss Land.png

Almost getting to the end I swear.

In 2015 he released Beauty Behind the Madness and was now known by everybody; he gained a lot of attention from the movie 50 Shades of Grey with his song Earned It.

The biggest songs from the album were The Hills and Can’t Feel My Face, you couldn’t turn on a single radio without hearing that pop candy song at the time. Which fun fact that song is about doing coke and was actually nominated for a Kids Choice award!

Starboy Legend of the Fall Tour Poster.png

And yeah, after all of this came Starboy and the EP My Dear Melancholy and most recently After Hours which is one of his best, in my opinion.

He’s gained a lot of respect in the industry from people like Elton John, Prince, Quincy Jones, Beyoncé and hell of a lot more.

So, if you haven’t listened to one of his albums yet, what the hell are you doing? Go and listen now!

I am Tired

Some country boy is sorry for saying the N-Word, but I am tired of hearing about it.

If you don’t know the guy because I sure didn’t, Morgan Wallen is an American country singer (not surprising he said what he said to me) and now all of his music is being removed from iHeartRadio, Sirius XM, Pandora and CMT.

When I say I am tired about hearing this I am tired of people knowing the words and what they mean, the reasoning behind it, but still saying it but then only apologizing because now they are getting humiliated on social media.

If you are a grown adult and you are aware of a what a word means yet you still say it, you’re plain dumb.

When anyone apologizes for saying a racial slur, they always say the same thing “I’m sorry, I’m so embarrassed it was never okay” okay? so then you knew the implications behind it but still decided to say it.

While some may be thinking “Well thank god we live in Canada” you’re wrong, the difference between Canada and America is that the racism here tends to get slipped under the rug and ignored. Because the sad truth of it all it that there are racists literally everywhere.

I am lucky to have never really been discriminated against as a lighter skinned Latina, but I see the way people interact with my parents, especially my father. It all just makes me so angry to the point where you’re like welp that’s just racism for you, but it shouldn’t be that way.

Lots of people want to argue “Oh were so sensitive now” when is it really that? Oh, I’m sorry that your poor little brother can’t go around calling everyone slurs because he feels like it. It really isn’t about being sensitive it is about educating and holding people accountable for saying words that they should not be saying, and this goes beyond just racial slurs but even slurs to LGBTQ people!

The sad part of it all is I always hear about it in the media and I’ve never heard it used around me or I would’ve ringed someone’s ear off telling them off, but when it did it shocked me.

I was at work just a regular day and a man came in, he was an older guy in biker type clothing and before you ask, yes, he was white, but his partner wasn’t. I take the guys order and I ask him, Can I get your name for the order? And he says “B*aner” and I honestly could not hear the guy or understand so after asking him several times he spelled it out for me. I stood there and I was like what? Because the slur isn’t really used in Canada as much as it is in America to people who are Hispanic. After looking at it for 10 seconds I realized holy sh*t this guy thinks he’s so funny.

Well, what do you do in that situation? Like i’m on the clock I can’t exactly deck the guy in the face with a bottle vanilla syrup. So, I stand there and I’m like I don’t get the joke and he goes its funny right, and I respond no I don’t think it’s funny I’m literally Hispanic, that’s a slur. The man doesn’t understand and at this point I’m just standing there shaking because the whole situation was giving me anxiety.

The whole time I had the coldest eyes staring into him and he didn’t get it he just kept repeating it’s a funny joke, shocked at the level of stupidity at 9 in the morning I just wrote bean on his cup while I really wanted to write Cracker, but I would be the one to get in trouble not him.

Point is.

Stop thinking the slurs or derogatory terms are funny or okay and to get over it, because they aren’t and you are just another ignorant person walking on this planet.

Who created Rock n’ Roll?

Rock music has evolved into so many sub-genres, but let’s not forget it’s origins.

Chuck Berry street art - "the founding father of rock n roll" - Denmark Street, London.png

Rock n’ Roll was first mentioned in the 1950s as a genre in the United States. The genre took elements of Rhythm and Blues music of the 1940s, the genre was also influenced by gospel, country and western music. Rock music also took elements of electric blues and folk into its genre.

The biggest origins of rock music come from the various elements of black musical genres, that being rhythm and blues, gospel music with country and western. The genre itself doesn’t have a main “creator” while unofficially many people tend to think of Elvis Presley as one of the best but let’s remember where he took his musical influence from shall we not.

Not to belittle Presley in any way but he knew where he took influences from for his music. One big name to remember is Chuck Berry.

Chuck Berry was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist and one of the pioneers of rock and roll, even being nicknamed the “Father of Rock and Roll”. He redefined rhythm and blues into major elements which made rock and roll distinctive to other music. Barry was among the first to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986; he was cited for having laid the groundwork for rock and roll.

So, I guess it is fair to say (in my opinion) black people made rock and roll because they invented every single musical element in that genre, and I think it is fair to say that I am right in this.

Things that were Created by Black People

You may know some mentioned or you never even knew.

House Music

House music that you hear now was created by 3 black gay men being Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. House Music is a genre of electric dance music characterized by a repetitive 4 by 4 beat and tempo of 120 to 130 beats per minute. The 3 men pioneered the music genre in New York City and Chicago which spread all over the world.  They laid the foundations for the modern DJaying, sampling music, remixes’ and EDM/Dance music you hear today.

Drag Queens

William Dorsey Swann was an American gay liberation activist born into slavery and was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first person to self-identify as a “Queen of Drag”.  Swann was also the first to lead the queer resistance a century before the stonewall.

Airbrush T-Shirt Designs

It seems this trend is pretty big right now in the streetwear fashion world, but you may not know it was created by Edwin Sacasa known as Phade, Rafael Avery known as Kasheme and Clyde Harewood known as Nike. The trio designed T-shirts for the biggest artists known as Jay-Z, Rakim and LL Cool J and they are one of the most influential designers in the HipHop fashion world.

Dapper Dan

Dapper Dan Interview Dec 2019.png

If you listen to a lot of rap/hip-hop music you have probably heard his name dropped in many song lyrics. Dapper Dan is an American fashion designer and haberdasher from Harlem, New York. His boutique operated from 1982-1992 and is most associated with high fashion in the hip-hop world. He’s been known as the “Father of Logomania” taking the logos of designers and placing them all-over clothing like those you see today made by designers like Louis Vuitton.

The First Blood Bank

Portrait of Charles Drew.jpg

Charles Richard Drew was an American surgeon and medical researcher. Charles is known for inventing the process to preserve blood plasma for long term blood transfusions  and organizing the first blood bank.

Steam Train Technology

Elijah McCoy.jpg

Elijah McCoy was one of the greatest Black Canadian inventors in Canada. Elijah McCoy invented the automatic oiling device in 1872 which revolutionized the steam train technology. During his lifetime he would patent more than 57 devices and was famous around the world as an inventor. His innovation added a new term into the English language.

And this is just a small list of it all!
