Wordle Sold to New York Times

What started out as a fun little game turned into a source of income for this software engineer.

The New York Times has bought Wordle. The Times, which announced the purchase of the game on Monday, is adding this word game to their stack of digital games. The company is on the quest to increase digital subscriptions to 10 million by 2025.

The sudden hit, Wordle, is a daily word game where players get 6 chances to guess a 5-letter word. With each guess the letters get highlighted a different color. Green means the letter is correct and in the correct place, yellow means the letter does exist in the word but it is not in the correct spot and black means the letter does not exist in the word at all. A new puzzle is posted every day and players can share how quickly they can solve the game on social media without giving away the answer to the challenge.

Part of the fun of this game is knowing that you can only play once a day and this creates more competition amongst family and friends.

Wordle was originally created by a software engineer, Josh Wardle. The game, which was a play on words from his name, was made to keep him and his family busy and entertained during the pandemic.

Amidst the pandemic, Josh Wardle stated that him and his partner found themselves occupied with the Time’s crosswords and spelling bee games.

“New York Times Games play a big part in its origins,” Josh Wardle stated, “and so this step feels very natural to me.”

Although the price at which Times bought it at has not been disclosed, it is stated that it falls in the low seven figures.
