Quarantine hobbies to try

Back in the day, well almost a year ago everyone began trying to find new ways to entertain themselves and that came in the form of hobbies. Some people picked up a skill they have always wanted to try, others tried to remember what they used to enjoy the most when they had all the free time in the world as children, and other people just tried to find something that could be enjoyed with other people that would make the time go by faster.

Either way we were encompassed by broadening our horizons in small day to day tasks and although COVID stomped on dreams, separated people to new levels and is being handled terribly, there has been some good to come out of it.

More people began to reconnect with their values, reconnect with what is important and reconnect with themselves. The months of doing nothing were actually months of doing the hard work on yourself that people need life times to reconnect with.

I think the hobbies we all individually picked up say a lot about ourselves and who we are and doing these hobbies (more so the ones you do alone) gave us the opportunity to really think and open our minds to what is important and what we actually want our lives to be. I’m sure this isn’t the case for everyone and you may be thinking “why didn’t I have this spiritual awakening while I was knitting those scarves?” But I do think this free time gives everyone a lot to think about and I don’t think these hobbies should be dropped by anyone.

Even as we progress (extremely slowly) into more normal life, I don’t think we should immediately put down our paint brushes and accept that there is no time for hobbies anymore.

Hobbies are extremely important. Think back to when you were a kid and all the time you had in the world to do the things you loved, we were all less stressed and depressed people. (I do get that a lot of that also comes from the fact that we were all taken care of and didn’t have to worry about adult things like taxes or cooking for ourselves).

Hopefully you get the point that these hobbies we have created for ourselves are good for us in a new way. Whether you want to reconnect with your creative side or liked it when your mind quieted while performing these hobbies. I don’t think they should be taken for granted and I think we should spend more time doing them to better ourselves and enrich our lives. So here are some other hobbies you should pick up if you feel like you have tried everything.

Painting/ Drawing: This hobby or any other art focused hobby is extremely relaxing (they don’t have adult colouring books for nothing). It’s a good way to clear your head and focus on the task in front of you, it is also relatively cheap and does not require all day to do, instead whenever you feel the need to decompress even if it’s just for 20 minutes or so.

Practicing an Instrument: Personally I have never been musically inclined and don’t see this ever being on my priority list but I do know people who have certain instruments they want to learn how to play, so if that is on your bucket list this is a fantastic time to learn how to play it. Although this hobby is not cheap it can be very rewarding to master, and hey maybe you could play a few shows when this whole pandemic is over.

Baking/ Cooking: A funny hobby to get into that can end in a wonderful, delicious product (most of the time). But cooking and baking are skills that everyone should possess but people are less and less likely to do, replacing it with frozen pizzas and Skip the Dishes. But cooking can be not only a great hobby that can help you get creative and try new things but it is also a life skill. Start out with some basics if you are very new to either cooking or baking. Try some stir fry or pasta dishes for an easy and delicious introduction to cooking, or try chocolate chip cookies for a simple and sweet dive into baking.

Remember to appreciate the time you have doing nothing!
