Things to do this Week

It is a new month friends and although it is still gloomy outside, and no real end to the looming pandemic we can still try to make the most out of each week until we can finally be reunited with the world again.

The grey weather outside seems to not be leaving the forecast all week and although that can make some of us miserable, it is the perfect opportunity to stay in and have some cozy nights at home (which is what we are all supposed to be doing anyways). But if you are still feeling restless there are plenty of things to do this week at home or around Vancouver in a socially distanced way, so here is another list of things to do this week.

As always, remember to stay socially distanced and masked when you are around others and skip to the “at home” parts if you’re not comfortable in social settings. But let’s get into it!

Plan Your Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and this (probably) the most normal holiday that we are going to get during COVID. Think about it, on Valentines Day you spend time only with your significant other (someone who is most likely a part of your immediate bubble) to relish in each other’s relationship, by either going out to dinner or having a cozy night in with just the two of you. Literally all things that are acceptable during COVID!

So enjoy this and come up with some fun ideas to do with your loved one based on your comfort level. (This could be some other things I mention in the rest of this list).

The most important thing is to make the most of this holiday, get excited and plan something! Get dressed up, splurge on food and drinks and really spend time with your loved one. Every holiday was taken from us this year so make the most out of this one.

Dine Out Vancouver: Dine Out Vancouver is officially here on February 5 until March 7th with amazing deals on meals of any kind. Places range from the very well known Cactus Club Cafes to little one off restaurants that really need local support right now.

Participating restaurants reach as far as Chilliwack meaning (like myself) living in the Fraser Valley can stay local and still be able to participate.

Meals range in price and include many great deals that include three course meals with prices ranging from 15-50$.

If you go on their website they even have options to find restaurants by ethnic cuisine type and what meal you’ll be eating (either breakfast, lunch or dinner). This is all a great way to support local business and find new favourite places for yourself. Start exploring your options here

Go to an Art Gallery or Museum: There are many museums and art galleries that are still open during this time and are a safe and educational way to explore the city. Limited tickets and hours means that fewer faces are in the way (as well as in your pictures) and you can truly explore these artifacts without feeling bad about being in the way of others.

A place to try out is the famous Vancouver Art Gallery, who are doing an exhibit on OP Art which was a (gorgeous) and international art movement from the 1960’s.

Or if you are looking for something more current look into Bill Reids Art Gallery that has a new exhibit starting tomorrow and going until May 9. Entitled Indigenous History in Colour this is a solo exhibit by Luke Parnell who enriches his craft by exploring Northwest Coast Indigenous oral histories, art and design.

Many places offer virtual experiences whether on their social media or by booking a time slot on their website, research the museum or gallery you are interested in to get a better grasp of their online presence.

Hot Chocolate Festival: Maybe it’s because I have not gone yet (and I want to go so bad) that I keep encouraging readers to go, but this sweet dream of a festival is ending soon!

There is a bit over a week before the Hot Chocolate Festival ends and we are back to a gloomy Vancouver February with only regular, barista style hot chocolate to make us feel better.

There are over 30 locations participating with a variety of backgrounds. From cafes to gelato shops, most of these places have 2-3 options, so  you can really get a selection of unique options without travelling around too much. Head to their website for full details and participating vendors here! (Also with a virtual map!)

Have a Movie Night: You probably see this entry and think “I do this everyday, day and night so why would this be something fun and interesting to do?” Well, there are ways to spice up a movie night without leaving your home. The big thing is to get into it, by intentionally making more of an effort than just throwing something on and spending most of the movie scrolling on your phone.

So maybe turn your living room into your makeshift movie room, remove that ottoman

and bring in your mattress and sleep there for the night, fill it up with blankets and pillows and get cozy!

For snacks and drinks make treats for yourself you normally wouldn’t, whether that be you bake yourself cookies, or you buy that candy you would only get yourself at the movies (for me it was always the miniature Starburst candies… gosh I miss pre-pandemic life!)

Then make sure you have popcorn, either make it yourself or buy some, Cineplex has it where you can still buy their popcorn through Skip the Dishes and UberEats, making for the best night in, you can check that out here.

Netflix has some new releases pumping in all month so if you are wanting a try at a new film then they have you covered.

Have a great, socially distanced week everyone!
