Canadian Cross-Country Ski Hall of Famer Celebrates 95th Birthday

A Norwegian-Canadian Cross Country Ski Hall of Famer is celebrating his 95th Birthday Today. He’s been called the Jack-Rabbit of Sainte-Anne-des-Lac, and since 1958 Mike Loken has been active in developing a network of ski trails throughout the Laurentian Mountains of Montreal.

“You have to be active” says Loken, speaking to the importance of fitness. Even at 95, with a hip injury forcing him out of the ski season, Mike manages to stay active.

“I workout on the stationary bike, and I try to go for a walk every day.”

Still involved in his community, Mike had the Laurentian Norwegian Club up to his home on Lac Cupidon for a luncheon on Saturday to celebrate his birthday.

“We went out for an hour and a half walk, and we were about 50 people.” Says Loken

Not without a sense of humour, Loken quipped that although he hosted the event, he certainly didn’t cook for it.
