On this International Women’s Day, I would like to take some time to look at some powerful Latina women who have made incredible strides in the world. We must always acknowledge that there are some incredible women all over the world and their stories deserve to be told.
Rigoberta Menchu is an indigenous woman from Guatemala who made strides in the indigenous women’s rights movement. She did so much for women in Guatemala that in 1992 she won the Nobel Peace Prize. Menchu is still fighting for indigenous rights to this day.
As the First Lady of Argentina, Eva Peron was a very controversial figure in Argentinian culture. With that being said, Peron fought hard for women’s rights in Argentina, eventually leading her to give women the right to vote in 1947. Powerful.
Frida Kahlo is a household name, everybody knows her and her beautiful paintings. She is a cultural icon. She channelled her pain she endured in her life into art and eventually made it big. Frida Kahlo is definitely a female figure to look up to and well deserving of a worldwide name,
One of the most famous literary masters from Latin America is Isabel Allende. Over her entire career she has sold 37 million copies of her books as well as having her stories translated into countess languages. In 2014, Allende received The Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. She’s incredible.
These 4 women are incredible representations of Latin culture. Keep it up ladies! Lets celebrate women not just today but everyday.
