Surrey’s mayor, Doug McCullum, is already making big moves just two days in after the new council has taken office.
One of two big announcements is to scrap the polarizing Surrey Light Rail train plan in turn for a SkyTrain.
The proposed LRT had funding approved for the $1.65 billion project and construction has been halted immediately
Despite the $70 million spent on pre-planning and pre-construction, McCallum believes the SkyTrain can be built for similar costs of the LRT. Although the latest cost estimates for the SkyTrain have it projected for up to $2.9 billion.
Work on the rail will be held off until McCallum brings the proposal to the Mayors’ Council in hopes of approval.
