Vision Vancouver’s mayoral candidate announced on Monday that he was pulling out of the race. Chief Ian Campbell raised a lot of excitement last May when he announced he would be running for mayor. As a hereditary chief of the Squamish Nation, Chief Campbell might have made Vancouver history.
Many good people are considering a run for mayor. But my leadership goes well beyond the status quo. It is my intention to be the first indigenous mayor of Vancouver. (May 2018)
The election this year has a broad base of candidates, because a bill banning corporate and union donations from local campaigns was introduced last October. Vision Vancouver have yet to announce whether there will be a replacement candidate, and no reasons have been given as to why Chief Campbell is ending his bid for mayor.
