I think you all need to relax and give the Black Eyed Peas another chance. What have they really done to earn your distrust? Produce consecutively great music over the years? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Sure, things after Monkey Business got a little weird, but let’s not discredit them completely.
Now most uneducated listeners don’t even realize there was a ‘pre-Fergie’ era. Will.i.am and da boyz (apl.de.ap and Taboo) have two solid hip hop albums (Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap ). It wasn’t until Elephunk dropped in 2003 when they started to gain serious traction. You’re liar and you should be ashamed of yourself if you deny the quality that is Let’s Get Retarded. The BEP don’t waste time getting y’all amped up on that track. We learn a lot about Will.i.am and his love for latina women in Latin Girls and apl.de.ap gets real with us and sings about his early life in the Philipines in The Apl Song. Shut Up builds up slowly with incredible rhythm and it’s impossible not to dance to Smells Like Funk. And we all know every party isn’t complete until we hear The Boogie That Be. Even if these songs aren’t getting you all jazzed up, they’ll at least bring you back fifteen years into 2003.
Besides every banger on this album, there is one song that has held strong. Where Is The Love? features Justin Timberlake in his prime and together, they produced such a powerful and lasting message. If everyone in the world would listen to Where Is The Love? and take its message seriously, we would live in a much better place. Instead of spreading love we’re spreading animosity. Our lack of understanding is taking us away from unity. The Black Eyed Peas just want what’s best for us, so why do we meet them with disdain and distrust?
Do yourself a favour and give Elephunk a good and honest listen. I think you’ll be surprised by the quality of production and the diversity in their sound. Take a trip to 2003, let your inhibitions go, and have Fergie sing sweet sounds into your delicate ear holes.
