New West Free Market grand opening

The New Westminster Free Market’s grand opening brought in over 100 participants.

The Free Market organizers just opened their first New Westminster location. The organizers estimated that over 100 participants came to exchange, give, and take items such as clothes, household items, and other things.

The Free Market is an organization that aims to build a community that focusses on “gifting” rather than monetary spending.

Shannon Hecker, one of the organizers, believes that free markets will impact the environment and community positively: “I think we’re inundated with capitalism and people are always spending money on things they don’t need when there’s a lot of stuff that already exists that we can just share with one another.”

At the Free Market, people are not required to trade or barter; people can just give and take as long as they need the items. Some participants also brought food and drinks to share, as well as music to set the ambiance.

Ethan Marr, another organizer of the Free Market, enjoys being a part of the community: “One of the wonderful things about the Free Market is you get the chance to possible see where it goes and see the joy on someone’s face when they finally grab that article.”

The organizers emphasize the importance of recycling goods directly to the community, rather than purchasing new items over and over again.
The New Westminster Free Market will be held every other Sunday.
