BCIT has access to two CFI funding programs, the John R Evan Leaders Fund (JELF) and the new 2020 Innovation Fund (IF). Each of these funds have different deadlines for applications with CFI. A new internal form has been developed for faculty interested in accessing CFI funding: BCIT Internal Request For Allocation for CFI Funding Application Form.
In the JELF fund we currently have an envelope of $400K that expires Oct 2019 (we will get a new allocation in the spring) and two application dates between now and October: June 15 and October 15.
BCIT’s 2020 IF envelope is $1.75M with CFI requiring Expressions of Interest (EoI) by Sep 6 2019, full applications by January 20th 2020 for decision in Nov 2020. The 2020 IF funding is a one time call, with the next Innovation Funding being likely available in about 2 to 3 years. Please see the links below and the attached documents for further information on these funds.
For the 2020 IF, although the CFI EoI deadline is Sept 6th 2019, there are a number of collaborative opportunities with other institutions that have earlier deadlines. All UBC collaborations must be submitted at UBC by April 15th in order to make UBC’s internal adjudication deadline.
Since the April 15th deadline is only next Monday, it would be very short notice to all those who might want to apply for 2020 IF funding to pull together an application. I propose that we make this process a set of multiple calls for people to put in BCIT internal applications and have the applications judged on each application’s individual merit rather than a single competition where all applications are submitted and adjudicated at the same time. The dates to have applications submitted by for consideration at each of the calls would be April 11th, June 13th and Aug 15th. If you have concerns regarding this, please let me know immediately.
I would also ask for everyone who is interested in making an application at some point before the BCIT internal Aug 15th deadline to please send me an EoI email with a one or two sentence explanation of what they will be requesting CFI funding for and an approximate amount (both to be clarified in the later application). Not sending an EoI email will not disqualify anyone from sending in an application in the future, it just helps us to know how much interest there is in this funding.
Also given the short time frame before April 15th, the IRC will need to meet electronically to adjudicate those applications wanting to meet the UBC deadline. I would request early applications to be submitted to Teresa by noon Thursday April 11th (and be resent out the all IRC members) with all IRC members to submit comment by email to me (copy Teresa) with a specific Yes to agree we should go forward with an application to CFI or a specific No that you do not agree we should go forward with an application to CFI by 4pm April 12th. I realize that this is a very short turn around.
