#6 The Car
Cars are a major source of water pollution in urban areas. In addition to causing air pollution, they leak oil, antifreeze, and other fluids onto roads and driveways — fluids that are washed directly into creeks via storm drains. By properly maintaining our car and reducing our use of it, we can protect streams and lakes from this toxic run-off.

Amazing Fact!
Automobiles account for more of the world's air pollution than any other source.
Amazing Fact!
Most antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which is toxic. The sweet smell of antifreeze attracts dogs and cats, who often die after lapping it up.
Amazing Fact!
A badly tuned car may emit 10 times more pollution than one that is well maintained!

I Pledge to:

A Reduce the use of my automobile by carpooling or by using public transit.
B Keep my car's engine tuned-up and have all fluid leaks fixed promptly.
C Recycle used motor oil and dispose of antifreeze at proper collection facilities.
D Wash my car in one or more of the following ways:

  • without soap, using water and a sponge.
  • over a gravel or grassy area.
  • with SMALL QUANTITIES of phosphate-free, biodegradable soap.
  • At a designated car wash stall in my apartment or townhouse complex.
