A Rare and Precious Resource

Of all the water on Earth, 97% exists in the oceans as saltwater. Of the 3% that is classified as fresh water, three quarters of that is locked up in ice caps and glaciers. Of the almost 1% of the world’s water that remains, the vast majority is located in underground aquifers. About 1/100th of all the fresh water on the planet is found as surface water in the form of rivers and lakes.

If the world’s water could be contained within a bucket, only one teaspoon would be drinkable. Of this amount, a significant portion is already degraded or inaccessible.
