Student Association announces expanded Student Centre, Childcare Facilities

BCIT and the BCIT Student Association (SA) have reached an agreement to expand available space to students and to provide an on-campus childcare centre at the Burnaby campus.

Expanded SE2 Student Centre

The SA will utilize the space in the Burnaby Campus’ SE2  building currently used as the executive floor to provide:

· a professional networking and presentation hub and additional individual and team project study space
· space for additional support services such as health and wellness practitioners to supplement the student health services offered by BCIT
· extended opportunities for on-campus catering and events and space for student clubs
· a quiet room for prayer or reflection and expanded lounge space.

A new childcare centre will be located at the Burnaby Campus’ SE41 building (Royal Oak) in the space currently used by Financial Services. The centre will fulfill a need on campus and is expected to open in early 2013.

The location at Royal Oak will provide for excellent roadway access for daycare pick up and drop offs, room for green space, and a space for a south-facing playground facility.

The BCIT community will be eligible for placement, with priority given to students. Twenty-five spots will be available for children aged 30 months to five years. The service is being facilitated by the Student Association but will be self-funding, so student fees will not be impacted.

Questions about the childcare and its operations should be forwarded to the BCITSA Uconnect Centre, 604-451-7087, or email uconnect@bcitsa.ca.

To facilitate these changes, BCIT Executive and Financial Services will be relocated to the third floor of the Gateway building.

The total costs of the moves will be $2.8 million, of which $2.5 will be provided by the Student Association and the remainder will be paid by BCIT.

    Hi there

I am planning to attend BCIT full time studies in September of 2013, I am trying to figure out the best way to put my three year old daughter into child care. I was wondering since priority goes to BCIT students first, how much will full time care run me? Oh ya and when exactly in early 2013 does the daycare re-open

Thank you very much for your help,

    Sincerely

    Andrew Colquhoun

    • Hi Andrew,

Anyone can sign up for the Childcare Centre, however BCIT students are given first priority for spots. The monthly fee is $795 for BCIT staff, faculty and students including a hot lunch and snacks.

For more information please contact the BCIT Student Association by phone 604-451-7087 or email childcaremgr@bcitsa.ca

      Thanks!
