Youth present their robotic solutions to today’s complex food safety issues
WHAT: Over 100 children ages nine to 14 will try and solve the world’s food safety problems one LEGO block at a time at BCIT this weekend. It’s part of the 2011 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Season and the FIRST Tech Challenge, two global programs created to get elementary and high-school kids excited about science and technology.
Teams will program LEGO robots to navigate obstacle courses, hit targets, and complete tasks in the most efficient way possible.
Hosted at the Burnaby campus of BCIT, and free to the public, this year’s theme, “Food Factor Challenge,” explores food safety issues and the logistical problems surrounding transporting and distributing it safely and efficiently.
This is the 8th annual BC (FLL) Championship Tournament and the winner earns a chance to be invited to the FLL Invitational Open Championships in Germany and the FLL
World Festival in St. Louis.
WHO: 12 teams (each with up to ten children) from across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island will use robots they have built on a course designed to test their ingenuity, resourcefulness, teamwork, and adaptability.
WHEN: Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm.
WHERE: BCIT Burnaby Campus, 3700 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby
