Associate Certificate In Public Works Supervision

Note that this credential is still undergoing approvals and subject to change

The CIM and the Public Works Association of BC (PWABC) are developing an Associate Certificate in Public Works Supervision. The certificate targets public works employees with 4-5 years' work experience and a desire to move into a supervisory role, or employees currently in a supervisory role who desire a credential and/or certification. The program will also be of interest to those working in the heavy construction field or linear infrastructure construction who want to move into supervisory roles.

The program consists of 5 mandatory courses (15 BCIT credits) and additional electives comprising 8 BCIT credits for a total of 23 credits. Students starting the program will have 5 years to complete the requirements.

The five mandatory courses comprise a technical and business writing course, a course in occupational health and safety, and three Public Works Institute (PWI) seminars. Electives will be chosen from a mix of technical and managerial course offerings. Courses will be delivered via seminars, internet, distance education, traditional classroom mode, or a combination of these.

Entrance Requirements

This program is open to all students with grade 12 graduation. Successful completion of a mandatory technical communications course (COMM 1103) is a prerequisite to all courses beyond the introductory Public Works Institute seminar. Although not mandatory, prior work experience in the public sector would be beneficial.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates can expect to find employment in mid-level managerial or supervisory positions with local governments, and in construction companies. Certification as a Public Works Supervisor will be through the PWABC, and will be awarded based on attainment of the Associate Certificate and 6 years of relevant work experience.
