September 25, 2012 by cingram

Girl with head in hands not looking at cameraDid you know that Surrey now has a Mobile Assault Response Team (SMART) ? SMART is a 24-hour service hotline, launched in June, that ensures victims have support after physical or sexual violence:

“Once in a safe place, specially trained workers help women explore their options, explaining the medical, legal and social services available, and help them come up with a safety plan.”

Lynn Gifford, instructor in our Forensic Health Sciences program and forensic nursing services coordinator at Surrey Memorial Hospital, was quoted in a recent Surrey Leader article that introduced the community to this new and important service:

“After an assault, it is critical that women and girls receive immediate medical attention due to the possibility of injury, pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.”

Please read the full article to find out more about the assistance SMART provides in Surrey.
