Rural Sexual Assault Victims – Turned Away?

November 24, 2011 by cingram

Lonely, deserted country road in the mistSheila Early, Program Coordinator for Forensic Health Sciences, recently set me a link to an article in The Province. This article discusses the care, or sometimes, lack of care, that sexual assault victims receive in rural communities:

“In rural communities, victims’ advocates say, some physicians and nurses aren’t comfortable handling sexual assault cases and are scared about getting caught up in the justice system. As a result, victims sometimes have to be driven hours away to urban hospitals for treatment.”

Some practitioners do come to the defence of the victims, saying all hospitals must be prepared to give the level of care that sexual assault victims require:

“‘When they have the courage to come forward, you have to be there,’ said Delcia Brideau of the sexual assault nurse examiner program in Moncton, N.B.”

New Skills Required for Forensics in the Cloud

November 23, 2011 by cingram

Blue lock on top of a circuit boardTina Yeo, Program Co-Coordinator for Computer Crime, recently pointed out this article to me. It’s an interesting interview with Rob Lee of SANS Institute, talking about the different skills a computer forensics professional will need to develop in order to have a successful career, especially in light of changes from hard-disk information storage to storage in the cloud:

“Forensics in the cloud, not necessarily a new field, requires a new skill set and being able to learn on the fly. Analysts also need to be proficient in mobile devices, operating systems, network forensics and the common hacking methodology…”

In the interview, Lee also discusses:

  • Identifying and overcoming key challenges;
  • The new skills required for forensics in the cloud;
  • Advice for those looking to shift their career into forensics.
