New technology could be the key to winning the March 24, 2012 race for federal NDP leadership. Candidate Nathan Cullen is testing the theory by using social media in his campaign for leadership of Canada’s official opposition.

With the campaign slogan “the next generation, the next step”, it’s fitting that social media is a strong presence in Cullen’s campaign. Recently, a series of “Why I support Nathan Cullen” videos have started to appear on Twitter, Youtube, and Cullen’s Facebook page.  The idea came from Vancouver volunteers for his campaign. Cullen and his team have jumped on board. He keeps up-to-date on his Facebook page, thanking people for their videos and asking supporters to post more.

“There’s no doubt social media is a significant part of the campaign for all political parties. It makes a big impact,” explains Coree Tull, B.C organizer for Cullen’s campaign and one of the first to make a support video.

Tull says Cullen’s team is hoping supporters take the initiative and share their videos with the community.  Still, the campaign is not letting go of old-fashioned techniques like going door-to-door. With a mix of new and old strategies, Cullen is hoping to appeal to a wider demographic of voters.
