IDEAS Workshop Recap – Starting and Funding Your Research Program at BCIT

On September 28, BCIT’s Commercialization Assistance Program (CAP) and the School of Business (SoB) put on their first IDEAS workshop. The purpose of the IDEAS Workshop Series is to offer educational lunch and learn sessions focusing on a broad range of topics related to research and innovation. The workshop series will provide tools and assist in improving innovation success rates for researchers, entrpreneurs, innovators and students that attend.

The first workshop was designed for BCIT researchers looking to start their own research projects. Roughly 20 people attended the workshop that took place in Townsquare C on BCIT’s Burnaby campus.

Joseph Boyd and Stefan Joseph, from the Applied Research Liaison Office (ARLO), gave a joint presentation on the steps researchers can take to jumpstart their research. This included identifying funding opportunities, preparing the paperwork and accessing the various resources available to researchers.

The day concluded with a presentation from BCIT Mathematics instructor David Holloway, who has conducted over 20 years of research over his career. Holloway provided the audience with several tips on how to acquire funding and how to balance your research projects with a full-time teaching load.

“Oh I found it very informative,” said BCIT mathematics instructor Takashi Nakamura. ”I’m new here and wanted to know how to apply for funding and how it’s possible to do research here being full-time faculty.”

The next IDEAS workshop is October 26 and will focus on business intelligence and market research. These sessions are free for BCIT faculty, staff and students and $25 for external participants. To register for upcoming workshops, access copies of the presentations from this workshop, or get more information visit:
